About the Test Plan template

A Test Plan is a controlled document that defines the scope, approach, resources, and schedule for testing a product or release. It sets out what will be tested, how, by whom, and against which entry and exit criteria, giving QA and stakeholders a shared baseline for coverage and risk. Without it, testing effort drifts, defects slip past release gates, and sign-off becomes subjective.

It's part of My QMS, MyPMP's Quality Management System: fill it in online, personalize it with your name and logo, then export a clean, branded PDF. Your work auto-saves in your browser.

When to use a Test Plan

  • β–ΈKicking off a new software release or major feature where formal QA sign-off is required
  • β–ΈDefining acceptance criteria and coverage before UAT with a client or business owner
  • β–ΈCoordinating testing across multiple teams, environments, or third-party integrations
  • β–ΈEstablishing a repeatable baseline for regression testing on regulated or safety-critical systems

What a good Test Plan includes

  • βœ“Scope: features, modules, and integrations in and out of scope
  • βœ“Test approach and levels (unit, integration, system, UAT) plus test types like functional, performance, security
  • βœ“Entry and exit criteria, including pass/fail thresholds and defect severity gates
  • βœ“Test environment, data requirements, and tools
  • βœ“Roles, responsibilities, and schedule mapped to release milestones
  • βœ“Risks, assumptions, dependencies, and a defect management process

Tips & common mistakes

  • πŸ’‘Define exit criteria in measurable terms (e.g. zero open critical defects, 95% test cases passed) before testing starts, not after
  • πŸ’‘Keep 'out of scope' explicit; most disputes at sign-off come from untested areas nobody agreed to skip
  • πŸ’‘Separate the stable Test Plan from volatile test cases so you aren't reissuing the whole document every sprint

How it works

  1. 1. Fill it in β€” type directly into the fields, tables and sections above.
  2. 2. Brand it β€” add your organization name and logo with the Branding button.
  3. 3. Export β€” print to PDF, or become a member to white-label and sync across devices.

FAQ

What is the difference between a Test Plan and a test strategy?οΌ‹

A test strategy is an organisation-level document describing the general testing approach across projects, while a Test Plan is project- or release-specific, detailing scope, schedule, resources, and criteria for that particular effort.

Who is responsible for writing the Test Plan?οΌ‹

It is typically owned by the test lead or QA manager, with input from developers, business analysts, and the product owner to agree scope, criteria, and acceptance conditions.

What should the entry and exit criteria in a Test Plan cover?οΌ‹

Entry criteria define what must be ready before testing begins (stable build, test data, environment), while exit criteria set the measurable conditions for stopping, such as defect thresholds, coverage percentage, and required sign-offs.
