About the SIPOC template

A SIPOC is a high-level process map that captures Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, and Customers on a single page. It scopes a process before deeper analysis, aligning a team on where work starts and ends and who feeds and receives it. Six Sigma teams use it in the Define phase of DMAIC to prevent scope creep and surface stakeholders early.

When to use a SIPOC

• ▸Kicking off a DMAIC or process-improvement project during the Define phase
• ▸Onboarding a team that lacks a shared understanding of an end-to-end process
• ▸Scoping process boundaries before drawing a detailed swimlane or value-stream map
• ▸Identifying stakeholders, upstream suppliers, and downstream customers for a Voice of the Customer effort

What a good SIPOC includes

• ✓Suppliers: who or what provides the inputs to the process
• ✓Inputs: materials, data, or resources the process consumes
• ✓Process: 4-7 major high-level steps, verb-first, from start to finish
• ✓Outputs: the products, services, or deliverables produced
• ✓Customers: internal or external recipients of each output
• ✓Process boundaries: clearly defined start and end trigger points
