About the Change Impact Assessment template
A Change Impact Assessment is a structured evaluation of how a proposed change affects project scope, schedule, cost, resources, stakeholders, and dependent work. It gives the change control board or sponsor the evidence needed to approve, reject, or defer a request rather than reacting to it blind. Capturing impacts early prevents scope creep and surprise downstream effects.
It's part of My QMS, MyPMP's Quality Management System: fill it in online, personalize it with your name and logo, then export a clean, branded PDF. Your work auto-saves in your browser.
When to use a Change Impact Assessment
- βΈA change request has been raised and needs formal evaluation before a CCB decision
- βΈA requirement, design, or scope item shifts mid-project and you need to quantify the ripple effect
- βΈAssessing whether a change breaches baseline tolerances for cost, time, or quality
- βΈComparing options or alternatives before committing to a change
What a good Change Impact Assessment includes
- βChange description, requestor, and the reason or driver behind it
- βAffected areas: scope, schedule, budget, resources, quality, and dependencies
- βImpact rating and analysis for each area, with quantified cost and time estimates
- βDownstream and cross-team dependencies, plus risks introduced or removed
- βOptions considered, including the do-nothing baseline, with a recommendation
- βDecision outcome, approver, and date for the audit trail

Tips & common mistakes
- π‘Quantify impacts in hours and currency wherever possible; vague 'high/medium/low' ratings alone rarely support a firm decision
- π‘Assess the cost of not making the change, not just the change itself, so the CCB sees the full trade-off
- π‘Involve the teams who own the affected work rather than estimating impact in isolation
How it works
- 1. Fill it in β type directly into the fields, tables and sections above.
- 2. Brand it β add your organization name and logo with the Branding button.
- 3. Export β print to PDF, or become a member to white-label and sync across devices.
FAQ
Who should complete a Change Impact Assessment?οΌ
Usually the project manager or a change analyst, working with the technical leads and stakeholders who own the affected areas so estimates reflect real delivery effort rather than guesswork.
How is it different from a change request form?οΌ
A change request captures what is being asked and why; the impact assessment analyses the consequences across cost, schedule, scope, and risk to inform the approval decision.
When in the change control process does it happen?οΌ
After a change request is logged and before the change control board decides, so the board reviews documented impacts and options rather than approving on assumption.
