About the Burndown Chart template

A Burndown Chart plots the remaining work in a sprint or release against time, giving the team a visual read on whether they'll finish by the deadline. By comparing the actual remaining-work line to an ideal reference line, it surfaces scope creep, stalled tasks, and unrealistic commitments early enough to act on them.

It's part of My QMS, MyPMP's Quality Management System: fill it in online, personalize it with your name and logo, then export a clean, branded PDF. Your work auto-saves in your browser.

When to use a Burndown Chart

  • Tracking progress mid-sprint during daily stand-ups
  • Forecasting whether a release will hit its target date
  • Reviewing velocity and scope changes in a sprint retrospective
  • Flagging blocked or under-estimated work before the sprint ends

What a good Burndown Chart includes

  • X-axis of working days or sprint dates
  • Y-axis of remaining effort (story points or hours)
  • Ideal burndown line from starting scope to zero
  • Actual remaining-work line updated daily
  • Total committed scope and any mid-sprint scope changes
  • Sprint start/end dates and current day marker

Tips & common mistakes

  • 💡Update remaining effort, not hours logged; a task is only 'burned down' when it's done
  • 💡A flat line signals blockers or work in progress that isn't completing—investigate at stand-up
  • 💡Watch for the actual line rising: that's added scope, and it should be tracked separately from delays

How it works

  1. 1. Fill it in — type directly into the fields, tables and sections above.
  2. 2. Brand it — add your organization name and logo with the Branding button.
  3. 3. Export — print to PDF, or become a member to white-label and sync across devices.

FAQ

What's the difference between a burndown and a burnup chart?

A burndown chart tracks work remaining trending toward zero, while a burnup chart tracks completed work rising toward a total scope line, making added scope more visible.

Should a burndown chart use story points or hours?

Sprint burndowns often use story points for a team-level view, while task-hour burndowns give finer daily detail; pick one unit and apply it consistently.

What does it mean when the burndown line is above the ideal line?

It means more work remains than planned for that day, indicating the team is behind pace, work was underestimated, or scope was added.
