About the Agile Sprint Plan template

An Agile Sprint Plan captures the goal, scope, and committed backlog items a team will deliver in a single time-boxed iteration, typically one to four weeks. It turns the sprint goal into a concrete set of user stories, tasks, and capacity estimates so the team knows exactly what "done" looks like before development starts. Without it, sprints drift, scope creeps, and velocity becomes impossible to measure.

It's part of My QMS, MyPMP's Quality Management System: fill it in online, personalize it with your name and logo, then export a clean, branded PDF. Your work auto-saves in your browser.

When to use a Agile Sprint Plan

  • β–ΈAt the start of each sprint during sprint planning, once the backlog is refined and prioritized
  • β–ΈWhen you need to confirm the team can realistically commit to the work given available capacity
  • β–ΈTo align the product owner and development team on a single, clear sprint goal
  • β–ΈWhen onboarding a new Scrum team that lacks a repeatable planning ritual

What a good Agile Sprint Plan includes

  • βœ“Sprint goal: one clear sentence stating the outcome to be achieved
  • βœ“Sprint dates, duration, and team capacity (available person-days or hours)
  • βœ“Committed backlog items with user stories, story points, and acceptance criteria
  • βœ“Task breakdown and owner for each story
  • βœ“Definition of Done and any dependencies or risks
  • βœ“Velocity reference from previous sprints to sanity-check the commitment

Tips & common mistakes

  • πŸ’‘Commit to a goal, not just a list of tickets β€” a shared goal lets the team make trade-offs mid-sprint
  • πŸ’‘Don't plan to 100% of capacity; reserve buffer for meetings, support, and the unexpected
  • πŸ’‘Only pull in stories that are refined and estimated β€” vague items belong in backlog refinement, not the sprint

How it works

  1. 1. Fill it in β€” type directly into the fields, tables and sections above.
  2. 2. Brand it β€” add your organization name and logo with the Branding button.
  3. 3. Export β€” print to PDF, or become a member to white-label and sync across devices.

FAQ

How do you calculate team capacity for a sprint?οΌ‹

Multiply available team members by working days in the sprint, then subtract time for holidays, meetings, and other commitments; many teams also apply a focus factor of 60–80% to reflect realistic productive time.

What's the difference between a sprint goal and the sprint backlog?οΌ‹

The sprint goal is the single overarching objective the team commits to, while the sprint backlog is the specific list of stories and tasks selected to achieve that goal.

Should story points or hours be used in a sprint plan?οΌ‹

Story points estimate the relative effort of backlog items and drive velocity, while hours are often used at the task level during planning; many teams use points for commitment and hours only for daily tracking.
