About the Service Blueprint template

A Service Blueprint is a diagram that maps every step of a service delivery process across parallel layers, linking what the customer experiences to the frontstage actions, backstage operations, and support systems that make it happen. It exposes the moments where handoffs fail, wait times build, or a step depends on a system nobody owns. Use it to align teams around a single view of how a service actually works before you redesign it.

It's part of My QMS, MyPMP's Quality Management System: fill it in online, personalize it with your name and logo, then export a clean, branded PDF. Your work auto-saves in your browser.

When to use a Service Blueprint

  • β–ΈRedesigning an existing service that has visible friction or repeat complaints
  • β–ΈLaunching a new service and needing to define frontstage and backstage responsibilities
  • β–ΈDiagnosing where delays, handoffs, or failure points occur across departments
  • β–ΈAligning ops, IT, and customer-facing teams on end-to-end delivery

What a good Service Blueprint includes

  • βœ“Customer actions: the steps a user takes across the journey, left to right
  • βœ“Frontstage: staff actions and touchpoints the customer directly sees
  • βœ“Backstage: employee activities the customer doesn't see but that enable frontstage
  • βœ“Support processes: internal systems, tools, and third parties that underpin the service
  • βœ“Line of interaction, line of visibility, and line of internal interaction dividing the layers
  • βœ“Physical evidence and fail points or wait-time markers at each stage

Tips & common mistakes

  • πŸ’‘Anchor the blueprint to a single customer journey and scenario; mixing multiple paths makes it unreadable
  • πŸ’‘Draw the lines of interaction and visibility explicitly so it's clear which layer each action belongs to
  • πŸ’‘Mark known fail points and handoffs rather than documenting the ideal happy path only

How it works

  1. 1. Fill it in β€” type directly into the fields, tables and sections above.
  2. 2. Brand it β€” add your organization name and logo with the Branding button.
  3. 3. Export β€” print to PDF, or become a member to white-label and sync across devices.

FAQ

How is a Service Blueprint different from a customer journey map?οΌ‹

A journey map focuses only on the customer's experience and emotions, while a Service Blueprint extends that view downward to show the frontstage, backstage, and support processes required to deliver each step.

What are the lines in a Service Blueprint?οΌ‹

The line of interaction separates customer actions from frontstage staff, the line of visibility separates what the customer sees from backstage work, and the line of internal interaction separates backstage staff from support systems.

Who should be involved in building a Service Blueprint?οΌ‹

Include people from every layer of delivery, such as customer-facing staff, operations, and IT or support teams, since each owns actions the others can't accurately map alone.
