About the Critical Path template

The Critical Path is the longest sequence of dependent activities that determines the shortest possible project duration; any delay on it pushes the finish date. Identifying it tells you exactly which tasks have zero float and must be protected, and where you can safely reallocate resources. Mapping it early keeps schedule risk visible rather than hidden inside a Gantt chart.

When to use a Critical Path

  • Baselining a new schedule to confirm the earliest realistic completion date
  • Deciding where to crash or fast-track to recover a slipping timeline
  • Prioritising resources when several tasks compete for the same people or equipment
  • Assessing the schedule impact of a change request or delay before approving it

What a good Critical Path includes

  • Activity list with unique IDs and clear task names
  • Duration and dependency links (finish-to-start, start-to-start, etc.)
  • Early start/finish and late start/finish dates for each activity
  • Total float and free float per task, with zero-float tasks flagged
  • The highlighted critical path sequence and calculated project duration
  • Milestones and key deliverable dates for orientation

Tips & common mistakes

FAQ

How do I calculate the critical path?

Run a forward pass to get early start/finish dates, a backward pass for late start/finish, then subtract to find float; tasks with zero total float form the critical path.

What is the difference between total float and free float?

Total float is how long a task can slip without delaying the project finish, while free float is how long it can slip without delaying its immediate successor.

Can a project have more than one critical path?

Yes—when multiple dependent sequences share the same longest duration, several parallel critical paths exist, and all of them must be managed to protect the end date.
