About the Business Requirements Document template

A Business Requirements Document (BRD) captures the business needs, objectives, and high-level requirements a project must satisfy to deliver value. It aligns sponsors, stakeholders, and delivery teams on what the business wants and why, before functional or technical design begins, reducing scope disputes and costly rework later.

It's part of My QMS, MyPMP's Quality Management System: fill it in online, personalize it with your name and logo, then export a clean, branded PDF. Your work auto-saves in your browser.

FAQ

How is a BRD different from a functional requirements document?οΌ‹

A BRD states what the business needs and why at a high level, while a functional requirements document (FRD) specifies how the solution will behave to meet those needs. The BRD typically drives the FRD and comes first.

Who is responsible for writing the BRD?οΌ‹

A business analyst usually authors it, working with the project sponsor and key stakeholders to gather and validate requirements. The sponsor and business owners are accountable for approving the final content.

How detailed should business requirements be?οΌ‹

Each requirement should be clear, uniquely numbered, and testable, but stay focused on the business outcome rather than technical implementation. Prioritise them (for example with MoSCoW) so the team knows what is essential versus optional.
