About the Team Charter template

A Team Charter is a shared agreement that defines a team's purpose, roles, working norms, and decision-making rules before the real work begins. It aligns members on how they will collaborate, communicate, and resolve conflict, reducing friction later when pressure builds. Created collaboratively at kickoff, it turns unspoken assumptions into an explicit reference the whole team owns.

It's part of My QMS, MyPMP's Quality Management System: fill it in online, personalize it with your name and logo, then export a clean, branded PDF. Your work auto-saves in your browser.

When to use a Team Charter

  • Kicking off a new project or newly formed cross-functional team
  • Onboarding a team with members from different departments or vendors
  • Resetting a struggling team after conflict or missed commitments
  • Launching a long-running Agile squad or programme workstream

What a good Team Charter includes

  • Purpose and mission: why the team exists and the outcome it delivers
  • Roles and responsibilities: who does what, plus decision authority
  • Ground rules and working norms: meetings, availability, communication channels
  • Goals and success measures: objectives and how progress is tracked
  • Decision-making and escalation: how choices are made and conflicts resolved
  • Team values and commitments: agreed behaviours everyone signs up to

Tips & common mistakes

  • 💡Write it with the team, not for them—buy-in comes from co-authoring the norms
  • 💡Keep it to one or two pages and revisit it at retrospectives so it stays current
  • 💡Be specific on decision rights; vague authority is the most common cause of stalled work

How it works

  1. 1. Fill it in — type directly into the fields, tables and sections above.
  2. 2. Brand it — add your organization name and logo with the Branding button.
  3. 3. Export — print to PDF, or become a member to white-label and sync across devices.

FAQ

Who should create a Team Charter?

The whole team drafts it together, usually facilitated by the project manager or team lead, so everyone commits to the norms and roles they helped define.

How is a Team Charter different from a Project Charter?

A Project Charter authorises the project and defines its scope, budget, and sponsor, while a Team Charter focuses on how the people will work together—roles, norms, and decision-making.

When should you update a Team Charter?

Review it when the team changes membership, hits recurring conflict, or during retrospectives; a charter that is never revisited quickly becomes ignored.
