About the Construction Estimate template

A Construction Estimate is a detailed projection of the labor, materials, equipment, and overhead costs required to complete a building project, typically broken down by scope of work or CSI division. It forms the basis of your bid, sets client expectations, and protects margin by exposing hidden costs before you commit to a contract price.

It's part of My QMS, MyPMP's Quality Management System: fill it in online, personalize it with your name and logo, then export a clean, branded PDF. Your work auto-saves in your browser.

When to use a Construction Estimate

  • β–ΈPreparing a competitive bid in response to a client or general contractor's RFP
  • β–ΈPricing a change order or scope revision mid-project
  • β–ΈProducing a budget for a renovation, addition, or new-build before design finalizes
  • β–ΈComparing subcontractor quotes against your own takeoff numbers

  • βœ“Equipment rental, permits, and mobilization costs
  • βœ“Overhead, contingency percentage, and profit markup as distinct rows
  • βœ“Subtotals per section plus a grand total with taxes and allowances

Tips & common mistakes

  • πŸ’‘Build a contingency line (typically 5-15%) rather than padding individual items, so clients can see the buffer clearly
  • πŸ’‘Base quantities on an actual takeoff, not square-foot rules of thumb, for anything beyond a rough order-of-magnitude number
  • πŸ’‘Date-stamp material pricing and note quote expiry, since lumber and steel costs shift fast

FAQ

What is a Construction Estimate?οΌ‹

It is a documented calculation of the total cost to complete a construction project, itemizing labor, materials, equipment, overhead, and profit so a contractor can produce an accurate bid or budget.

How is an estimate different from a quote or a bid?οΌ‹

An estimate is your internal cost projection with a probable price range; a quote or bid is the fixed price you formally offer the client, usually derived from the estimate plus markup.

What markup should I add to a construction estimate?οΌ‹

Markup varies by market and risk, but residential contractors commonly add 10-20% for overhead and profit, while smaller specialty jobs may carry higher percentages to cover fixed costs.
