About the Bill of Quantities template

A Bill of Quantities (BoQ) is an itemised schedule of the measured works, materials, and labour required for a construction project, prepared from drawings and specifications. It gives every tendering contractor a common basis to price against, so bids can be compared like-for-like, and it later supports valuations, variations, and interim payments.

It's part of My QMS, MyPMP's Quality Management System: fill it in online, personalize it with your name and logo, then export a clean, branded PDF. Your work auto-saves in your browser.

Tips & common mistakes

  • πŸ’‘State the measurement standard used so contractors price on a consistent basis and disputes over quantities are reduced
  • πŸ’‘Keep preliminaries and provisional sums separate from measured works, don't bury them in item rates
  • πŸ’‘Double-check units against drawings, a mΒ² entered as m distorts the whole tender comparison

FAQ

What is a Bill of Quantities?οΌ‹

It is a detailed, itemised list of the materials, labour, and works needed for a project, each with a quantity, unit, and rate. It lets contractors submit comparable priced tenders and forms the basis for later valuations.

What is the difference between a firm and an approximate Bill of Quantities?οΌ‹

A firm BoQ is measured from complete drawings and is used for tendering a fixed scope, while an approximate BoQ is based on incomplete design and re-measured on site as the work is built.

Who prepares the Bill of Quantities?οΌ‹

It is usually produced by a quantity surveyor or cost consultant working from the architect's and engineer's drawings and specifications, before tenders are invited.
