About the Bill of Materials template

A Bill of Materials (BOM) is a structured list of every material, component, and quantity required to complete a construction scope or assembly. It ties takeoff data to procurement and cost control, so crews know exactly what to order, how much, and to what specification before work begins.

It's part of My QMS, MyPMP's Quality Management System: fill it in online, personalize it with your name and logo, then export a clean, branded PDF. Your work auto-saves in your browser.

When to use a Bill of Materials

  • β–ΈPreparing a material purchase order or requesting supplier quotes
  • β–ΈEstimating direct material costs during bidding or budgeting
  • β–ΈCoordinating deliveries and staging for a specific work package or phase
  • β–ΈTracking installed versus remaining quantities during field execution

Tips & common mistakes

  • πŸ’‘Standardize units of measure across items so quantities roll up cleanly into totals
  • πŸ’‘Add a waste or overage factor (typically 5-10%) rather than ordering exact takeoff quantities
  • πŸ’‘Reference the source drawing or spec section for each line so revisions can be traced and re-priced

How it works

  1. 1. Fill it in β€” type directly into the fields, tables and sections above.
  2. 2. Brand it β€” add your organization name and logo with the Branding button.
  3. 3. Export β€” print to PDF, or become a member to white-label and sync across devices.

FAQ

What is the difference between a BOM and a takeoff?οΌ‹

A takeoff measures quantities directly from drawings, while a Bill of Materials organizes those quantities into a priced, purchasable list with specifications, suppliers, and units of measure.

How do you structure a multi-level Bill of Materials?οΌ‹

Group items by assembly or work package, listing parent components with their child parts indented beneath, so quantities can be rolled up from sub-assemblies to the total build.

Should a Bill of Materials include labor?οΌ‹

A traditional BOM covers only materials and components; labor and equipment are usually tracked separately in an estimate, though some field BOMs add a labor column for combined installed-cost tracking.
